Alimony

There are two types of spousal support (alimony).

Rehabilitative Alimony: This is when alimony is paid only for a set amount of time as stated by the courts as a reasonable time to allow for the receiving party to get back on their feet and be independent of the support of their ex-spouse.

Permanent Alimony: This is when spousal support is paid indefinitely. Despite the name, permanent alimony does not mean that it will be paid for a lifetime. Because it is sometimes hard to gauge how long it will take someone to rehabilitate back into the working world, permanent alimony will be awarded. However, when the circumstances arise that the receiving spouse is no longer in need or is thought to be no longer in need, the paying spouse can petition the court to reduce or discontinue the spousal support all together. This action is entirely up to the paying spouse. The courts will not monitor this and it is not required that the receiving spouse report it to the courts.
